Zentraveler on the Prostate, PSA, and Proscar.

I will start with mi cheeky inside joke.  When I meet with mi God I want to praise him  and tell mi God I am a great fan of his work, but I have only one question why did you make mans prostate so small?  Was it a material problem or a design flaw or was it so urologists would have a hefty income.

Every man forty years plus will have to deal with his prostate until he dies.  Your great grandfather didn’t even know what a prostate was.  Lucky Fellow!  As you age  your prostate grows larger and eventually causes a variety of problems which include frequent urination, inability to urinate, BHP benign prostatic hypertrophy, Prostatitis infection of the prostate, and Prostate Cancer.  The bad news is it is possible to have all three, however most simply haveBHP enlarged prostate which wraps around your tubes restricting eurine flow, velocity and causing many nite trips and makes you search out every toilet on the planet..this is especially nice when taking a five hour bus trip and you have to piss like a racehorse.  Preying with jaw clenched that the bus will actually stop for a break.  Glad you have your tennis shoes on because now its an out and out race to the toilet.

Most people in the civilized world who can afford it get annual medical check-ups.  Not sure why but they do.  My mother lived one hundred years and never had an annual medical check-up.  One of the tests for males is the PSA test which has recently come under scrutiny in the United States, because they discovered there were too many unnecessary prostate biopsies.  No matter which side your on on this issue.  Early detection of a high PSA, plus a DRE digital rectal exam and a detailed questionnaire has saved many males from dying of Prostate Cancer.  If you are dark skinned, have relatives who have or had prostate cancer, overweight, have a high diet of red meats and processed foods like hot dogs and live in a cold climate with limited vitamin D sunshine you increase your probability of having prostate cancer.  Asians who live near the equator whose main diet is fish, vegetables, olive oil and red tomatoes have the least amount of prostate cancer.

So what to do?  A very good question.  I was doing great after having many PSA tests with different results and eventually quit getting PSA tests and even thinking about my prostate until without me knowing it I had an executive medical checkup in Philippines and the doctor said my PSA was elevated and should probably have a biopsy.  I am still on the wait and see mode.  If no more PSA elevation  I won’t get a biopsy.  The root question is should you get a PSA test or not.  It depends on what you want to do based on your prostate symptoms and research…there is no clear cut answer. The short answer is it is probably better to have a eurologist or medical clinic schedule a PSA exam and blood test…so you have a baseline of information.

Now it gets messy and expensive if you have prostate cancer there are at least ten different possible cures and outcomes and the procedures without insurance cost in the neighborhood of fifty thousand dollars depending on where and how you get the procedure done.

Bottom line three of my friends have prostate cancer, one is cured from a clinic in Korea, but still has prostatitis which is not cured and has almost the same urination difficulties, other friend had  a radical prostatectomy, where they surgically remove prostate, and my other friend has been going through chemo-therapy for three years and his prostate cancer has metastasized into his bones, after the doctor said he was cured.

What to do, what to do! What to do?  You can try natural herbal cures which includes saw palmetto, zinc, selenium and some Chinese prostate pills.  You can chew raw pumpkin seeds, watermelon rind and one fellow is his nineties eats an avocado every day and has no prostate problems.  The other alternatives include taking an 5-alpha reduuctase inhibitor brand name Proscar 5 mg daily which will reduce the size of your prostate and also lower your PSA score which after six months as an example if your prostate PSA was ten and is now PSA five…your real PSA is still ten.  The formula is to double your current PSA while on Proscar and the doctor will factor that in as your real PSA.  The other choice is to take an alpha blocker brand name Flomax, which works immediately and does not lower PSA but increases urine flow. Some doctors have their patients on both drugs which helps with their urination and prostate problems.

So there you have it until someone creates a synthetic prostate that can be replaced at your local clinic…you will just have to grin and bear it!  I have been told bears don’t have prostate problems because of their high intake of salmon and blueberries.

THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW: Most men do not know where the prostate is or what it’s for, so here’s a snip of information. Named by the Greeks as,‘that which stands before’, the prostate lies just below the bladder and surrounds the top part of the urethra – the tube that drains urine from the bladder. The size of a pea at birth the prostate gland grows to the size of a walnut in the male adult, that’s about one inch by three quarters of an inch by one and a half inches (2.5 cm by 1.9 cm by 3.75 cm).

Function of the prostate:The secretions from the prostate keeps the lining of the urethra moist. The prostate also produces most of the semen and seminal fluid that transports and nourishes the sperm. Prostate enlargement occurs in 43 per cent of men over the age of 60.

THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO SAVE: Your PSA scores.  What else would grown men talk about if  they exhausted the topics of golf, politics, and women?

ZENTRAVELER SAYS: Don’t worry grasshopper…you lucky devil.  Grasshoppers don’t get enlarged prostates, prostatitis or prostate cancer.  You can also skip the sometimes painful and embarrassing Digital Rectal Exam and the PSA blood test.
