As time marches forward medical technology is rapidly closing in on some of our worst nightmares….THE DREADED BIG C or THE DREADED CANCER. If I were to place a bet I predict some research group in the immediate future will discover a cure for cancer. If I was chosen to perform cancer research I would look for the ugliest, awfullest, poisonous snakes, jelly fish, mantra ray’s, the deadly blowfish… mix that with some scorpions, poisonous tree frogs, wart hogs and you might just discover the cure. Every disease has a natural cure somewhere. It’s up to science and modern technology to discover a cure for cancer.
Researchers are going in every direction to find a cure for cancer and they are getting very close. Just recently a small research firm in California discovered that the sea snail had the ability to stop cancer dead in its tracks. There are several problems…we have very limited supply of natural sea snails so this research company has learned to grown sea snails in a controlled environment and can then in the not to distant future extract the blood from the sea snails and make a vaccine to cure cancer.
The California sea snail may end up going down as one of the most exciting biotech stories of the future. At the heart of the issue is a compound called Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin, or KLH for short.Most likely unfamiliar to anyone without a PHD in Biochemical engineering or Pharmacology, KLH is one of the most important base-ingredients for the creation and evaluation of new pharmaceuticals.
The reason is, KLH is one of the most widely-applied ’carrier proteins’ currently in use. It is the molecule which, by virtue of its shape, has the ability to deliver the active ingredient of a multitude of medicines to key receptors points inside cell walls. KLH works on an intra-cellular level, it will be a necessary component of any future drugs designed to kill Malignant Cancer Cells… Which means that the future cure for cancer itself will likely rely on KLH sea snail intervention.
The problem with the cancer cells is a lot of the antigen that are expressed on the cancers is actually your own tissues. The body sees them: This is my own, I shouldn’t react to it. : Cancer cells are, in essence, your own cells. So your immune system doesn’t see them as foreign invaders. And, as such, it fools your immune system to kind of ignore them and let them keep growing. And when the tumor mass gets to be a certain size, then your body no longer be able to handle it. So doctors use treatments like radiation and chemotherapy, which target all fast-growing cells in your body… that’s why cancer vaccines have such promise. It’s something that it’s high on the radar screen because of the characteristics—that they can differentiate the normal cells from the tumor cells and be able to target the treatments to the tumors. Cancer vaccines could train your body to only attack the cancer cells. The challenge is finding something on cancer cells that would help your immune system differentiate them from your own cells.
So there you have it! As the clock ticks faster and faster modern science is closing in on a long-awaited cancer cure. If you have too much money and time why not do your part and contribute to the eradication of all cancers.
